The Kew Bridge "Eco Village" has shut down recently. Hooray. I know green activism is very popular these days, but really ... do we need to build slums like this in London? Is this a blueprint for sustainable living in the developed world?
Sure, we Londoners buy way too much cheap Chinese crap which we don't really need, we waste too much food, use too many plastic bags and too much petrol ... We should rethink our daily activities and cut down on waste. But which wacko came up with these tarpaulin tents and compost toilets? Seriously?
Sometimes I think environmental activism is a lot like religion.
- Instead of Hell, there is global warming. A theory of apocalypse has been invented, because fear is the easiest way to manipulate people. Do as we say, or you will burn! Your children will burn! Poor people in the third world will burn!
- Non-believers must be converted. Let's put on our t-shirts, paint banners, shout into loudspeakers in Parliament square and save people from their own ignorance. Let's campaign! Let's raise awareness! Let's turn into missionaries!
- And while we're at it, let's raise funds too! Just like the Catholic church, environmentalism is an efficient money-making machine. Collection baskets are passed around every Sunday and nobody asks where the cash goes. (It goes to God, stupid! He's using it for the upkeep of Heaven.) Good conscience is sold for a price. Swap your usual purchases for overpriced organic / GM-free / ecological / fair-trade brands and you will be assured a place in Paradise!
- Demonstrations work the same way as church gatherings, because they get like-minded people together for the purposes of reaffirming their deluded views in a communal environment.
- Once upon a time, everyone in the Catholic church knew that the Earth was flat. Today, everyone knows that climate change is happening. Yes, much of the scientific evidence behind global warming has been discredited, while the rest relies on complex computer-aided forecasting models with a whole bunch of uncertain assumptions and hypotheses. And yes, nobody in the scientific community can quite agree if the Earth is actually getting warmer or colder ... but so what? We can just rename global warming to climate change and then we are covered for every possibility. Believe us, the Earth is flat! Common sense, people!
